Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

The NMSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) provides local review and oversight of life science research and academic programs involving recombinant nucleic acid molecules and biological agents that are infectious, pathogenic or toxic to humans, animals or plants.

The IBC guides and supports the work of the university's researchers to ensure that research and teaching activities conducted at or sponsored by NMSU are in compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (NIH Guidelines) and all applicable regulations and standards for biosafety. We strive to develop awareness toward protecting the health of researchers, the community and the environment through an effective biological safety program that emphasizes risk assessment and biological containment.

NMSU researchers and laboratory directors planning to use potentially biohazardous materials including recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids must register their protocol with the IBC for guidance and approval.
